Buprenorphine is a prescription medication used to treat opioid use disorder and, in some formulations, moderate to severe chronic pain. As a partial opioid agonist, it activates opioid receptors enough to reduce withdrawal symptoms and cravings while producing a ceiling effect on respiratory depression, making it generally safer than full opioid agonists when used as prescribed.

How it works

Buprenorphine binds very strongly to the brain’s mu-opioid receptors but only partially activates them. This combination helps relieve withdrawal symptoms and cravings while limiting the euphoric effects seen with many full opioid agonists. Because it binds so tightly, it can displace other opioids from these receptors, which is why starting treatment too soon after using opioids may trigger precipitated withdrawal.

Buprenorphine is available in several formulations, each designed for specific medical purposes:

Some opioid use disorder products combine buprenorphine with Naloxone. Naloxone has little effect when the medication is taken as directed but is included to discourage injection misuse.
